Blog Post #4

Watching Eve’s Bayou upset me, but I did enjoy the film. I liked how Eve’s Bayou

incorporated real-life horror with supernatural elements. I believe the film touched on very dark

yet important topics such as molestation, infidelity, and dysfunctional families. What surprised

me about the film was learning that the original cut of the film included a scene of the uncle

viewing the kiss scene between the father and daughter. I found this film cut interesting because I

believe it could have made the film's ending a lot different. While Eve uses her powers to find

out the truth about what happens, I believe it would have been a really interesting ending to add

the uncle. I am curious if he could have been a crucial plot point in the film, possibly causing

even more chaos within the household. While the professor discussed that the change was a

minor cut, I still think this could have been a very interesting addition to the plot because both

the viewer and the uncle know what happened. This, I believe, could have added another

dimension to the film that would have made it a little more interesting.

Through this film, I believe that the artist’s message was to demonstrate the effects

dysfunction within both a marriage and a family can have on children. Throughout the film, the

children were the ones who struggled the most with their father’s infidelity and overall gross

behavior. Because of this, Eve’s special powers, I believe, represent a manifestation of the mental

turmoil children are put through at such a pivotal time in their lives. Eve’s emotional distress,

paired with her powers, was enough to ‘kill’ her father. I believe this symbolizes the toll familial

dysfunction has on children and the importance of stability and safety in a child’s life. While

there was a supernatural element to the film, I believe a lot of the themes and symbolism touched

on very dark, yet real issues. I also think the guilt that Eve feels for ‘killing’ her father is

demonstrative of the guilt that many feel with grieving a loved one, especially one who was so

horrible yet important in Eve’s life. I feel this film demonstrated the hectic and heavy emotions

that children go through when tragic things happen in their lives. In doing so, Eve believes the

voodoo killed her father rather than his horrible actions. This is also important because it is

representative of the guilt of others' actions that can be taken on when grieving someone.
