Catwoman

As a child, one of my favorite movies growing up was Catwoman with Halle Berry. After watching Miss Representation, I can tell that this movie is another victim of the objectification of women in the media. In the movie Catwoman, there are some very independent and powerful women but also most of the women were existing in order to please a man or the male- dominated society. For instance, the main antagonist has a beauty cream that is supposed to make people, more specifically women, look more youthful. It’s often catered to women in the movie in way that is expected to please men, this is just evidence of stereotypes being imposed onto women in the media. Not to mention Catwoman, Halle Berry, wears little to no tight clothes and when fighting has very sexual movements. This is to appeal to one large demographic, men. There is no independent woman that fights men and looks good doing it, there is simple a scantily clad women who goes around purring. After rewatching this movie, I can tell that it is just another movie that overly sexualizes women instead of empowering them.

I totally agree with you. Catwomen is way over sexualized. I fee like Catwoman is another example of the "Fighting F*cktoy" that we learned about from Miss Representation. Her fighting abilities are really good, but when she is fighting, it looks as if she is doing an over sexualized dance. The outfits that she wears is so over sexualized too. Even if they do not show as much skin in some of the outfits its still so tight that you can see the whole figure of the her body which is evidently done intentionally in order to draw the attention of men. In "The Batman" movie that will be coming out in 2021, Catwoman's character will be played by Zoe Kravits. There was recently an image of her in the Catwoman outfit, and the outfit literally has a cut right where her breast are. That is so unnecessary and wrong that they are sexualizing women like that.

Sure, the oversexualization of Catwoman is unfortunate, but by posting this, your're carelessly overlooking the very pressing issue of the oversexualization of men in todays media. Consider poor Timothee Chalamet; no matter what role he's cast in, he's obsessed over by teenage girls worldwide. His skill as an actor is completely overlooked, and he is seen by his fans as merely a beautiful (very lean) slab of meat. Sooner or later, because of the desperate objectification of him that has occurred with every character he's every played, he may only be cast in specific and demeaning roles: roles where he is objectified, has very little depth to his character and no purpose other than to satisfy desperate teenage girls.

I agree with your point and I don't think many of us realize how much men and women are objectified in movies most of us have watched until we really get an eye-opening experience like Miss Representation. It led me to think of all the cartoons I watched when I was little, and how the actors were fit and 'attractive'. It can really mess with our mind, or it goes unnoticed. I think it sucks that we have to live in a world where we have become so focused on looks.

Whitewashing Roles in Movies and TV

This has been an issue in Western and especially American media for years, the whitewashing of roles in movies and tv. There are so many actors of color who are robbed of their chance to showcase their talent due to whitewashing and also the status of an actor. For instance, the  movie, The Great Wall, set in ancient China, has a main character of Matt Damon, who is of European descent and identifies as white. Matt Damon is the hero in the movie that helps the Chinese people fight off lizard-alien invaders. This role could of easily, and would have made a lot more sense, if it was given to a person of Chinese decent. There are plenty of Chinese-American actors or actresses that could have filled this role and executed it. But this is just simply another show that American media is being whitewashed, a country with so many different cultures and ethnicities should have movies and actors that represent that, whilst also being successful.
